What music do you use to test your speakers?

So, you've got your new sound system or brand new headphones and you want to test your sound quality. Do you have a go-to song? Here are some of our favorite songs for testing sound quality and why we love them:

1. Bohemian Rhapsody

This song has everything from heavy bass, to soft piano, to a'cappella, to switching from the right and left speaker outputs. You can practically test it all with this one song.

2. Clair De Lune

Testing for soft and silent moments is just as important as testing for loudness. If your speakers are are great for high sensitivity, then you  should not hear any hissing or buzzing sounds during the quiet parts of = the song.

3. Lucky

Both vocalists have such pure voices and the backup behind the vocals is  pretty simple in this song, so this one is a great test to hear how  natural the vocals sound.

4. Hotel California (Live)

This is a great song for testing your bass right at the beginning when  the bongo comes in. Remember, testing bass isn't about looking for louder bass notes, a good subwoofer is actually going to increase the = deepness of the bass notes.

Some of the best sound tests are done by using your favorite songs  because you are familiar with the songs and will know what to look  for.

What are your favorite songs for sound tests?

TV Repairs

What Can Be Fixed, What Should Just Be Thrown Away, and What is Worth Keeping.

“I really don’t watch much TV,” that’s what we hear a lot. You really don’t notice how valuable your TV is in your home until it stops working. It’s a connection to anything that you find interesting or anything that you want to see. News, sports, comedies, movies and games etc. they’re all found through using a TV. No other device out there connects so many different types’ age groups. Doesn’t matter if you’re 2 or 92 there is a good chance that you’ll be using a TV today.  Questions always arise when your TV goes out. How much does it cost? Is it worth it to fix? Should I just buy a new one? Will it permanently fix the problem(s) if I have it repaired?

It’s our goal to make sure that you’re happy with the TV you own. But there are going to be some differences. Not all brands of TVs are equal. That’s why we don’t carry every brand out there. The main brands that we carry are:

  LG                       Toshiba

 Samsung              Sony
 Sharp                   Panasonic
 JVC

All these brands will have good values such as: good picture quality, and good pricing but one of the reasons that we carry these brands is because we can repair them here in our own store. Parts are readily available and we can fix them if there are issues. This can’t be said for other brands. For example if you were to search on Google “What is repairable on a TV” you would get at least 4 results of articles where Vizio has told their customers that after a year they can’t repair their TVs and to throw them away. In the first year if you do have a problem they will offer to have you ship your broken TV to a warehouse in trade of a “re-certified” used TV.  With no extra parts made for a lot of cheap brands it makes it almost impossible to fix and if there are parts they usually cost as much as you bought the TV for.  We are certified to repair all the TVs we sale. We don’t send your TV to some place in New Jersey or Malaysia to get repaired, we do it all in house.

All these name brands will come with a one year manufacture warranty and if you do have problems we can work with you to make sure and problems are covered by the manufacturer. All extended warranties that we sell are in addition to the manufacture warranties (1 year manufacture warranty + 3 year extended = 4 years of total coverage). These will cover any repairs needed on the TV. While we repair your TV we will leave you with a loaner TV so that you’re not TV less.

Any name brand flat screen as long as it doesn’t have a damaged screen can be fixed. If your son has tomahawked an Atari game piece at the screen better to give up hope in fixing the screen it will cost more to fix it than buying a new TV. Really as long as it isn’t a damaged screen or burnt pixels we can fix most things. Doesn’t matter if its LED, LCD or Plasma, a damaged screen is not worth it to get fixed.

Tube TVs or CRT TVs usually aren’t worth fixing if it’s a major issue. Small things can be repaired, but I wouldn’t recommended spending a lot of money on a TV that is outdated. Save your money and put it towards something you can enjoy new.

Some of the Plasmas made 5 or 6 years ago are still sought after. For example Pioneer’s Kuro Plasma TV is still one of the most sought after Plasma TVs on the market. LG and Samsung also made TVs that were close to the Pioneer quality as well. If you have trouble turning the power on in your TV usually it’s a power supply issue that can be repaired easily. On a lot of flat screens we see have this issue, and it’s something worth getting repaired.

For a small deposit we can get your TV diagnosed and suggest the best way to get it fixed and if it’s not worth fixing we’ll make sure to tell you to save some time and money. So that TV that you thought might be broken forever? It might not be too far gone to get it repaired and back to its old glory.

Home AV Receivers

Anthem AV Receiver
Seems these days we've had a lot of you asking about Home Theater Systems. We love that you come to us for advice on different options for your home. We find that most people put a lot of emphasis on the speakers. Now while speakers are crucial to your theater we need to be sure that we pick the right receiver for your setup. With so many options for receivers and so many blown up specs it’s hard to decide what’s best works for you.
A Home AV Receiver or Surround Sound Receiver, is the heart and brain of a home theater system and provides most, if not all, the inputs and outputs that you connect everything, including your television or projector. A receiver combines two different functions:
A Preamp that controls which audio/video source is selected (Blu-ray Disc Player, DVD player, Satellite or Cable box, CD player, iPod, etc) processes the incoming stereo/surround sound signals, and distributes audio to the channels and sub woofer output.
A built-in Multi-channel amplifier (5, 7, 9 or 11 channels) that sends the surround sound signals and power to the speakers. Also, one or two preamp outputs for connection of a powered sub woofers is usually an option.
Back of Pioneer Elite Receiver
You always see Ads for AV Receivers, always lists the Watts per Channel rating. One receiver has 50 Watts per Channel (WPC), another one has 75, and still another has 100. The more watts the better right? Not Necessarily. Most people think that more watts means more volume. An amplifier with 100 WPC is twice as loud as 50 WPC right? Not really.
Sound level is measured in Decibels (db). Our ears detect changes in volume. A db is on a scale of loudness. For a Receiver to be twice as loud as another, you need 10 times more wattage output. A Receiver with 100 WPC is capable of twice the volume level of a 10 WPC amp. A receiver with 100 WPC needs to be 1,000 WPC to be twice as loud. Tricky numbers!
An additional factor is the ability of a receiver to output its full power continuously. In other words, just because your receiver/amplifier may be listed as being able to output 100 WPC, doesn't mean it can do so for any significant length of time. Always make sure that, when you check for specifications, that the WPC output is measured in RMS terms. This means that the listed power output is sustained output at a specific volume level.
The brands that we carry are:
Yamaha, Pioneer
Denon, Onkyo
Marantz, Anthem
Klipsch Palladium

We love these brands for many reasons one of those reasons being that they aren't big blowing their specs out of proportion. When Paul Klipsch started designing his famous speakers his company used a slogan, “No BS.” Straight to the point and with great sound without over doing it through specs. Here at Lynn’s we love this. We don’t start naming off specs every time you come to look at Audio equipment. 95% of the time when someone buys Audio equipment it’s how it sounds. We all want the best sound for the right price. So let your ears do the thinking and give your calculator a break. Pick the system that you could listen to for hours, not spend hours talking about it’s specs.
